What is ÖSD anyway? Austrian Language Diploma is an examination system for German as a foreign or as a second language. Above all, it is advantageous that the exam has its focus on communication, so the ability to communicate in real everyday situations is examined. The ÖSD exam consists of 2 parts – written (first exam day) and oral (second exam day), and is offered in 6 language levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2).
The ÖSD exam is recognized at various universities and educational institutions in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, but to be completely sure, you have to inquire in advance whether or not the desired institution accepts the ÖSD language test.
Worth knowing about the ÖSD examination:
This exam was founded in 1994 and in 1995 the first exams took place in 7 licensed centers.
More than 200 licensed centers in 30 different countries now offer ÖSD exams for more than 40,000 people.
The ÖSD examination center is a member of the European Association of Foreign Language Examination Boards (ALTE), which is worth knowing because the embassies of Austria, Germany and Switzerland only accept certificates from the ALTE participant centers to confirm the level of the German language.
The examination documents are sent by post to the center of the center in Vienna, where they are checked and stored in a database.
The levels of the ÖSD examinations correspond to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
It is often asked whether one may use a dictionary in the exam. Generally speaking, for levels A1, A2, B1, the dictionary is not allowed. From B2 one may use single or bilingual dictionary.
It should be emphasized that one can prepare independently for the ÖSD language test. You just have to look at the exam modalities and become familiar with the material. In order to prepare for the ÖSD exam, it is advisable to look at the respective model examinations (for example, model examinations German A1, model examinations German A2, model examinations German B1 and others). Why do you need the ÖSD certificate in Austria? Let us consider what options arise from the individual certificates:
ÖSD Zertifikat A1 (ÖSD ZA1) - offers the opportunity to work in international companies around the world. It is also required to obtain a national visa for the bride in Austria or for family reunification. With this certificate you can become a member of the Summer School or the Summer Camp at the University.
ÖSD Zertifikat A2 (ÖSD ZA2) - is required to work in an international company or to get a job as a service employee in Austria.
ÖSD Zertifikat Deutsch B1 Österreich (ÖSD ZDO B1) und ÖSD Zertifikat B1 (ZB1) – is required for the acquisition of Austrian citizenship, work in international companies. Is also necessary for the fulfillment of the integration agreement.
ÖSD-Zertifikat B2, ÖSD-Zertifikat C1 oder ÖSD-Zertifikat C2 - some Austrian universities and colleges require the ÖSD certificate C1 for approval.
Materials for preparation for ÖIF examination
In 2017, a new integration law was passed. As a result, a new integration test for third-country nationals has been introduced, which aims to examine not only linguistic competences but also the knowledge of values and orientation. It has to be said, that there have already been other tests (ÖIF A1, ÖIF A2 test, German test for Austria A2 / B1 and B2 ÖIF test).
The central guidelines and principles of life in Austria are included, to check how well one is familiar with the culture and values of the country. This is the main difference of the ÖIF integration exam from other exams, where mainly only language skills are tested. Generally, you need the ÖIF-tests for citizenship and permanent residence.
The ÖIF Integration Examination B1 consists of 4 parts:
listening & reading
value and orientation
Each part must be completed with retention of certain times.
Day 1 - listening and reading, writing;
Day 2 - speaking.
To pass a language test, you must register in advance, indicating what level of language you need.
