How to Write Christmas Greetings in german | IFU Sprachschulung GmbH

The Christmas dinner menu is planned, the gifts are waiting to be given, and the only thing that is left is to find the right words for holiday greetings. If spontaneity isn’t particularly your strength, go ahead and use the following ideas not to make a blunder.

Typical greetings

In many situations a short wish of Merry Christmas, blessings, love and health will do it. The words that you may most often see on German postcards are Gesundheit, Glück, Freude, Liebe, Frohsinn and Erfolg. But let’s be honest, your best friend will hardly be thrilled to receive a typical text message, such as

- “May piece, success and love accompany you on your way! I wish you a Merry Christmas”.

And the aunt-cousin, who couldn’t make it to the family dinner, may even feel a chill, if you text her

- “A happy and peaceful Christmas to you and your family!”.

So better spare these phrases for acquaintances.

If you received a similar message, your answer may be

Danke, auch dir/Ihnen frohe Festtage und einen guten Rutsch” - “Thank you, happy holidays and a happy New Year to you too”, or simply

Danke, gleichfalls” (“Thank you, and same to you”), “Wünsche ich dir/Ihnen auch” (“Same to you”). Make sure you understand the difference between formal and informal, singular and plural you in German.

Informal greetings for family and friends

Our advice is to prepare very personalized greetings for your family and other near and dear ones. Has your close person been busy with work and couldn’t find some “me-time”? You may want to wish him or her to take well-deserved rest, recreate and have fun!

Lass dich/Lasst euch über die Feiertage schön verwöhnen!“ - “I wish you happy holidays, time to relax, and many nice moments in the coming year! Indulge yourself on these holidays!”.

In the circle of friends elevated wishes are not necessary: if you are close enough to make jokes about each other, incorporate them in your greetings as well!

- “Merry Christmas! Enjoy cookies, roast and grog, because it will soon be summer again”.

And remember that the best greetings to your family and friends are the ones with genuine emotions.

Romantic greetings

Christmas is a family holiday, so you should emphasize the importance of your other half even if you celebrate it separately:

Du bist ein Geschenk für mich und machst Weihnachten festlicher. Ich habe dich lieb/Ich liebe dich“. - “You are my gift and make Christmas even more festive. I love you”.

What do I wish myself for Christmas? To be together every day! I love you to the moon and back, and wish you sweet holidays!”.

The answer may be:

Danke, mein Schatz! Das wünsche ich dir auch. Ich liebe dich”. - “Thank you darling! I wish that too. I love you”.
